newAEA AEA R88 MKII

Stereo ribbon microphone.
  • Description
  • Features

The AEA R88 MKII is a stereo ribbon microphone, designed primarily to record groups and instruments, but suitable for a wide range of sources. Producer Ben Hillier has an AEA R88 MKII in Miloco’s The Pool studio, and can often be seen floating around the front of a drum kit being used as a stereo room mic.

The ribbon configuration in the AEA R88 MKII is based on the large ribbon round in the original RCA 44 microphones, providing a 20Hz bass response along with a beautifully smooth high end.

The simplicity and ease of use when it comes to tracking in stereo with a single microphone is a huge bonus evident with the AEA R88 MKII. Having two ribbons configured in a single unit is very useful in a number of recording situations.

The natural sonics of the AEA R88 MKII comes from the two long, un-dampened ribbons. The simple engineering on this large mic is conducive to the un-coloured and smooth sound it produces, minimising artefacts that weren’t part of the audio source.

The configuration of the AEA R88 MKII is optimised for an organic stereo response. The ribbons use two figure of eight polar response patterns that are at right angles to each other. The mic gives an excellent off axis frequency response, and uniform on-axis response. It provides a large dynamic range and low distortion.

Due to the arrangement of the two large ribbons, the AEA R88 MKII has a well defined central image. Phase effects are minimised between the two channels too. Location of sound sources in the stereo image is well defined and easily readable in the recording, while central sources are well defined, and a clear sense of ambience is perceptible.

The AEA R88 MKII is a beautiful mic, it’s large frame is reassuringly sturdy, and the stereo sonic results are stunning.
