  • Features

The Neumann KM184 is a small diaphragm condenser mic, part of the Series 180 for renowned microphone manufacturers Neumann.

The Neumann KM184 is the cardioid small diaphragm condenser microphone from the Series 180. A classic miniature style microphone, Miloco have KM184s in the mic cupboards at La Chapelle, Black Rock, Lightship 95 and Assault and Battery 2 studios. Also available as a stereo set with a range of different polar patterns, the humble 184 is surely one of the most popular miniature style condenser mics on the market, building on a rich heritage of the vintage KMi Neumann mics.

The Neumann KM184 has the same capsule as the classic KM84, but the 184 has a slightly different on axis frequency response. The soft rise at the 9kHz mark is a popular characteristic of the Neumann KM184, and was first introduced on the KM140 with great success and critical acclaim. The result of this rise is a sonic balance that feels livelier and crisper compared the the flat response 84.

Other mics in the Series 180 include the KM183, which is omnidirectional, and the KM185, which is hypercardioid. These two are based on the Neumann KM184, which is by far the most successful and popular microphone in the range, becoming almost the industry standard pencil style microphone in the relatively short time since it was introduced by Neumann as the natural successor to their previous KMi miniature microphones.

Available in black or satin, or part of a pair in a studio set, the Neumann KM184 is a key member of any studio’s microphone lineup.
