Thermionic Culture The Freebird is a beautiful valve equaliser with three channels, from boutique British company Thermionic Culture. Designed with the simple aim of providing significantly better sound and performance than their solid-state counterparts, Thermionic Culture’s unique and sumptuous valve units have become a staple favourite among record producers, including Livingston Studio resident and Gotham Producer Mike Crossey.

Thermionic Culture The Freebird is a half-rack style EQ with three channels, build to add the kind of character and warmth that a plugin cannot achieve. The idea behind having a three channel EQ was to provide the option of using it on both a stereo and mono bus together, or as a multi-channel console-style EQ. Of course you can always fill the other half of the rack with another Freebird to provide three stereo busses!

Of course you can always fill the other half of the rack with another Freebird to provide three stereo busses!

Other useful features include indented controls and switches for easier recalls and a transformer based input section allowing for no loss of level no matter what the input type is.

Going through the unit, here is a brief descriptions of the controls:

The Gain control is indented and continuously variable, allowing you to match both bypassed and EQ’d signal levels, or experiment with the sound at different operating levels.

The Top control uses two shelving EQ frequencies at 9kHz and 15kHz, switchable with the toggle switch.

The Midcut control is a stepped pot with 31 positions, allowing you to cut mid frequencies using the same curve as Thermionic Culture’s popular “Rooster” unit.

The Presence control has 5 lifting EQ curves. The switched positions take the frequency curve from around 700Hz up to 3kHz.

The Bass control operates in the same way as the Top control, with the two switchable frequencies being 100Hz and 50Hz.

The HPF switch operates a high-pass filter, with selectable roll-off frequencies to remove those unwanted bass rumbles.
