  • Features

Thermionic Culture The Phoenix SB is Thermionic’s famous Phoenix stereo valve compressor. The SB is the standard production model, which now incorporates side chain filter controls and an HT standby. Thermionic Culture are a boutique UK-based company that manufacture all-valve audio units of the highest quality. The Phoenix is their famed stereo compressor, used by the likes of Craig Silvey in Miloco’s Toast Studios and Mike Crossey in Miloco’s Livingston Studio 1. We have also just provided a new Thermionic Culture The Phoenix SB to producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths).

New features in the SB model include the HT Standby switch, which has been designed to put the Phoenix into a low-power standby mode to help prolong the life of the capacitors and valves. The meter calibration controls are now on the front panel for east access. The side chain filters are used to reduce the Phonix’s compression on lower frequencies.

The overriding impression one gets from using Thermionic Culture The Phoenix is the beautifully smooth soft knee compression. It’s a lusciously subtle compressor designed to gently take control of the dynamic range without harming the sound quality. Of course, as with all of Thermionics units, the valves can be driven has hard as you like to produce harmonic distortion and a more extreme ratio to add a bit more character to a recording. The most popular use of the Phoenix in our experience is the natural warmth and control it can bring to a vocal.

All the usual compressor controls are present and correct on the front panel of Thermionic Culture The Phoenix: Gain, Attack, Release and Threshold. There are two channels, each with a bypass switch, and there’s a link switch to link them together. Included as well are the switched pots for each channel’s side chain controls, and output level controls for each channel are also provided.
